It is testament to this threequel&#8217;s plot, writing, directing, lighting, acting, editing, special effects, pacing and catering that I was able to stay in character as a Na&#8217;vi for the entire eight hour and 48 minute runtime without needing to shower or readjust my skimpy loincloth.<\/p>\n<p>Dressing as a tree-hugging alien transpired to be the correct decision as the premiere was presented to us in 3D IMAX on one of the world&#8217;s largest screens, meaning those in attendance would not be watching the film, but actively participating in it. That was quite evident from the opening scene when one of the Mountain Banshees ripped through the screen and performed a variety of disorienting barrel rolls, causing a number of critics to fly off their seats and possibly die. Thankfully, I brought my own saddle.<\/p>\n<p>The plot follows the Sully family and their friends as they encounter a new Na&#8217;vi tribe of pyromaniacs, led by a sexy fire witch (Glenn Close) with a gun fetish. The human army, meanwhile, is still busy serving as a patronising metaphor for colonialism as they continue to farm for alien whale juice. If it weren&#8217;t for the fact that I was blowing on pan pipe and burning sage on the cinema floor, the American appropriation of indigenous culture probably would have upset me. I did enjoy the explosions, though.<\/p>\n<p>Some may say that Fire and Ash is exactly the same as the two films that came before it, and that thought did momentarily cross my mind. But then Sigourney Weaver plugged her neuro-ponytail into a shrub and let out a coital cry that deeply resonated with me. I immediately rose from my seat, readjusted my Na&#8217;vi ears made from tiny cereal boxes, and tongued the dangly nerves at the tip of my own ponytail &#8211; just as James Cameron intended.<\/p>\n<p>Though sitting through almost nine hours of this felt like the cinematic equivalent of driving to Cornwall on a steam roller, Fire and Ash is probably the best of the saga so far. And it&#8217;s just as well.
